Ideal for cross-curricular learning in German class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their German language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their German vocabulary. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. This challenge uses the definite article in the responses to help consolidate students’ knowledge of the gender of individual countries and the use of the dative following the preposition von. The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. Before playing, it’s useful to show students a map of Europe, so that they can visualize the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with Europe, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities. There are blank templates for children to research and create their own facts cards for each other. This is a really successful way of building knowledge and learning together. As their knowledge and understanding of the French-speaking world grows, children should add to their facts cards, which eventually builds up into a fabulous facts bank, which they can use the entire school year, and beyond. Facts recording sheet challenge level 1 - there are two options: either two or four fact recording boxes per page. Children read their selected facts, and copy the information in the boxes. Encourage children to be as accurate as possible with their spelling and punctuation, to pay particular attention to the spelling and accents of the French words that are included, and of course to make sure they are recording the facts in their best handwriting Facts recording sheet challenge level 2 - there are also two options: two or four fact recording boxes in this challenge level. However, there is a more open-ended task: responding to the question “What did you learn?”. This requires children to read their fact card, process the information, and then recreate it in their own words, describing the fact in the context of what they have learned. Encourage children to look for lateral information, such as the existence of other countries where French is spoken, and to think about the continent where those countries are located. 48 question / comprehension cards - the questions have a differentiated range of challenge, and are based on the knowledge developed through the whole-group presentation and discussion, and the facts cards. There are some independent research questions, which I use as a springboard for further discussion based on children’s own developing interests about France. There are blank templates here too - creating questions is a great way to think about and apply knowledge and learning. question / comprehension cards recording sheets: the recording sheet has four boxes per page. I encourage children to write their answer in full sentences, and to give as much relevant information as they can. They can also give more detailed responses than they can learn from the cards, engaging in further independent research. I like to combine this activity where possible with organised visits to the school library to gather relevant titles on France and La Francophonie, and do allow children to access pre-vetted websites. 2 x whole-group facts presentation & discussion - I’ve found this a really useful means of encouraging and stimulating classroom discussion. Children can reflect on what they may already know about France, and share it with their peers. Use the facts themselves to prompt discussion about the home / host country, for example “What is our capital city? Is it also our largest city?”, which really does create a successful cross-curricular learning environment. The activities work really well across a series of lessons, rather than a single lesson. Print, laminate and cut out the cards - laminating is certainly worth the prep time, as the cards will last for many years. You can either give each small group of children a complete set of cards to choose from, or any particular number you think is appropriate. Decide how long you want the reading and writing activity to last for, and tell children how many cards you would like them to work with. This is quite a basic way of differentiating the activity. Children can then select random cards from their bowl. You can also select particular cards yourself if you prefer to differentiate by content, seating plan or learning groups for example. Print out an appropriate number of recording sheets - you can also differentiate by quantity - for example, if you want to challenge children to complete 8 fact recording boxes or question / comprehension cards in a given time, it’s best to print the sheets double-sided. Choose which challenge level is more appropriate for each child, and whether they will feel more comfortable with two or four recording boxes per sheet. Over time, ensure that all children are given opportunity to complete Challenge Level Two - I’ve found that most children are more than able to make significant progress with their literacy across a period of time, and engage happily (and realistically) with Challenge Level Two. Remember to tell children how much time they have to complete their activity. The question/task cards and accompanying recording sheet are a really popular activity too, with a slightly different approach to reflecting on and applying knowledge. Children do like to discuss their favourite fact and what other things they might like to discover about France and the French-speaking world, so do given them the opportunity to do so over the school year. They should ideally stick the recording sheets into their workbooks, or keep carefully in their learning files or folders as both a reference resource and a record of learning, both for themselves and for you - it’s a great way of monitoring progress and assessing learning. I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of English, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. I give my students these worksheets at the same time as introducing the time set, so that they can practise and embed both recognising the time, and writing the time phrase itself. Students really enjoy the opportunity to test their recall too. The worksheets are useful in a number of contexts: I use them for sub lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities. Please read the Terms of Use. The facts focus on world languages, and is a great whole-group learning activity at any time of the school year. They’re particularly useful as***ice-breakers in the back-to-school phase***, as it’s a very social activity, and really gets students up from their desks, walking around talking to each other. The information addresses a very wide range of languages topics, from world history, history of language, varied fields within linguistics to global languages facts for example. The cards are designed for older students, as the facts do require a certain level of world knowledge and language awareness, and particularly world geography. I always screen a world map first, pointing out continents, countries, regions and territories and so on, because using the cards is also a great way of actually learning about the world, its history, shifting geographical and political borders, migrating populations and so on. I use the cards in various ways: for example, a really popular method is the walk and talk activity, where students take a card each, walk around the classroom, exchanging facts - when they’ve shared the information on their card, students swap cards, and carry on walking — in this way, they encounter the same facts a couple of times, which really embeds knowledge. I tend to do this activity several times across the school year, following it up with an informal whole-group quiz, particularly when I feel that students need a break from more formal learning. I also use the cards as either entrance or exit cards - again, followed by a quick quiz at several points in the year - simply turn the language on the individual cards into a question format. This works really well when students quiz each other, which moves them away from teacher-led learning towards more independent and social learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and question formats in French. The question card template available in some sets enables students to apply their knowledge practically and creatively, which is an essential element to successful language learning. To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. Identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. I created it for the EFL / ESL classroom, and it works really well for learners across a broad spectrum of ages and stages of learning. It’s great to learn some English Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my language learners to learn all of them, as the goals of the game are about speaking, listening and reading in English, and introducing learners to different Christmas traditions and practices through the images, rather than simply building vocabulary. There’s definitely a UK-theme with some of the images, such as Christmas cracker and mince pies. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation and reading out loud practice too. I’ve included a***whole-group presentation*** to prepare learners for the words in the game, and I also use it to talk about Christmas traditions we know, in the UK and beyond. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain, with a couple of cards slightly out of order to keep learners on their toes! This can either be a ‘human’ chain, though having learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor works really well too. There are 32 Christmas cards, so perfect for very large groups. With smaller groups, some players can simply have two cards, or select another card when they have already placed their first card in the chain. The first and last cards have I have the first card and It’s the last card - Happy Christmas written on them. Learners love it when you play too! I use the presentation to work on pronunciation, and to embed vocabulary a little more - it’s great for spelling games and quizzes too. Laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and you’ll be able to use them for years to come! There are 5 resources, each for £1, featuring active, differentiated, multi-skill and independent learning activities. Some of the resources overlap various learning stages, though I’ve found that students, regardless of age or stage, often benefit from, and genuinely enjoy, working with activities that are primarily designed for other ability or knowledge stages. This may be either as practice and revision, or as additional or more accessible and manageable challenge. These factors are all key to motivating learners to engage with, and progress in, a new language. There’s certainly prep work involved with some of the resources – I always laminate my language and task cards for example, as they’re much more easy to manipulate, and so far more learner-friendly. They do however last in excellent condition for years, so for me, laminating is definitely worth the prep time and extra expense. You don’t have to prepare them all at once – the resources are definitely useful for the longer-term, so you can take your time with the prep, focusing on what you’re working with at any specific stage. I’ve found that lessons around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practising language and structures we’ve looked at over the semester. The questions are entirely in English, and students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their developing knowledge of English in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context and images, which have a real England/UK Christmas theme, such as Christmas crackers and mince pies, with vocabulary and structures repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves really well with them. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. Students really do benefit in terms of language learning if they have regular and frequent opportunities to work with the cards, rather than simply working with them in a single lesson. The English Christmas vocabulary provides a really useful springboard for discussion about Christmas customs and traditions in England and the UK, comparing and contrasting these to other Christmas practices students may know. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, focusing on the days of the week in English, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. There are 5 English to English grids, labelled with Big Ben, where learners are prompted with the English words, and look for them in English in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features a Spanish word list that they have to complete, as extra practice for saying and writing the days of the week together in both English and Spanish - this works really well for embedding language. It’s actually really useful to introduce the pluperfect tense in German quite closely with the perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practise both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together. Similarly, I do tend to introduce the perfect tense and imperfect tense together, as usage of the tenses is not directly equivalent with English for example, particularly in spoken German. The workbooks focus on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, but I’ve found that when my students are able to provide the correct conjugation very quickly, and out of a specific context, they feel really confident that their German conjugation skills are developing well, which is a key step in creating and producing correct German, in both oral and written form. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. I definitely find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. Students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language with the patterns and rules of the language they are learning. For example, with the German imperfect tense, with students whose first language is English, I frequently see attempts such as ich war machen for I was doing / making or similarly ich machte arbeiten for I did work. Students also tend to look for a direct translation of the notion of ***used to…***, before they understand that the notion is implicit in the tense itself. I refer frequently the difference in usage between English and German, and this is important particularly when explaining when and in which contexts to use the various tenses. Though the workbooks focus solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are fixed conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written German is accurate, and that their understanding of German across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. I’ve used these ‘quick conjugations’ for many years with my German classes. My students definitely find them to be a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I use them in a range of contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I tend to give my students regular opportunities to practice the conjugations during the whole schools year, and they find this really useful for mapping their own progress and developing their overall understanding of how German conjugation ‘works’. There are four sets, each set consisting of 198 matching German and English vocabulary cards, so that’s 792 vocabulary cards in total, with an 18-page Reference, Recall and Write workbook, featuring all the words and phrases written out in full, plus three differentiated recall challenges. There’s definitely some prep involved with the cards - printing, laminating and cutting out - but they will definitely last for years! The workbooks are good to go - print and photocopy, using the staple function on the copier, which will automatically create the workbooks for you. Written Recall Challenge 1: students write the English word or phrase from a German prompt Written Recall Challenge 2: students write the German word or phrase from an English prompt Written Recall Challenge 3: the words and phrases appear randomly, alternating German and English, which is a real memory challenge!
